About the tournament

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is the leading global tournament in the One Day International format. National teams compete over 50 overs per side, subject to playing conditions and weather. The 2027 edition will expand to 14 participating teams.

Dates and fixtures

The ICC has announced the schedule for the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup, running from 2 October to 21 November. The Super Series begins on 2 October, the group stage starts on 7 October, and the final takes place in Johannesburg on 21 November. For important matches and the competition format, see the detailed sections below.

Tournament format

The 14-team competition includes a preliminary Super Series, a 12-team group stage, a seven-team Super 7 round and the knockout semi-finals and final. The ICC confirmed this new structure in July 2026.

Teams and qualification

The ICC has announced the ten automatic entrants and two main-stage groups, with remaining places to be settled through qualification. Group A includes India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe; Group B includes New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England and Bangladesh. Each group will also contain a qualifier.

Host countries and venues

South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia host the tournament at twelve announced venues across the three countries. The final is scheduled in Johannesburg, with the semi-finals set for Cape Town and Tshwane.

Previous editions and records

Past World Cups have produced memorable ODI performances and champions. Historical results can be expanded with verified records, winners and notable finals as separate reference material.

Cricket World Cup 2027: dates and major matches

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 runs from 2 October to 21 November 2027. The 14-team tournament features 57 matches at 12 venues across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The opening Super Series takes place in Namibia, while the main group stage begins on 7 October.

The ICC has published a tournament schedule, including key group games and knockout dates. India and Australia are scheduled to meet in Cape Town on 7 October. India and Pakistan are scheduled to face each other in Johannesburg on 10 October. As with any long-range fixture list, supporters should check the ICC’s official updates before making travel arrangements.

The semi-finals are scheduled for 17 and 18 November, with the final on 21 November in Johannesburg. Unlike the earlier draft of this guide, the tournament should no longer be described as having an entirely unannounced fixture schedule.

Confirmed groups for the 2027 ODI World Cup

The ICC has announced two groups of six for the main stage. The remaining qualifier places are yet to be filled by the qualification pathway, so the groups below deliberately show placeholders rather than invented team names.

Group A: India, Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and Qualifier A. Group B: New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh and Qualifier B. These are groups for the main 12-team stage; the entire tournament begins with 14 qualified teams because three sides compete in a preliminary Super Series for one of those places.

The hosts are South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, but the host designation alone does not mean that Namibia is automatically in the main group stage. The ICC’s qualification model gives direct qualification to South Africa and Zimbabwe, while Namibia participates in the broader qualifying pathway.

New 2027 World Cup format explained

The 2027 event expands the men’s ODI Cricket World Cup from ten teams to fourteen and introduces a different route to the knockout stage. The first round is a three-team Super Series, in which the three lower-ranked sides coming through the qualifier each play one another. The best side progresses to the main group stage.

The 12-team main stage is divided into two groups of six, with each team playing the other five teams in its group. The top three from each group, together with the better fourth-placed team across the two groups, advance to the Super 7.

The seven teams in the Super 7 play a single round robin against one another. The four highest-ranked teams reach the semi-finals, with first playing fourth and second playing third. The winners qualify for the final. Results and points from the initial group stage do not simply carry over as points in the Super 7, so supporters should follow each stage’s current table.

World Cup qualification: how the 14-team field is decided

South Africa and Zimbabwe qualify directly as host nations. Eight further automatic places were tied to the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings at the 30 September 2026 cut-off, making ten directly qualified teams in all.

The other four teams come through the Cricket World Cup Qualifier. The winner of that qualifier goes straight into the 12-team main group stage. The teams finishing second, third and fourth play the preliminary Super Series for the remaining main-stage place.

That structure means a nation can be one of the 14 tournament participants without starting in Group A or Group B. It is important to distinguish confirmed main-stage teams from sides that still need to progress through qualification.

Host nations and venues across southern Africa

The 2027 tournament brings the men’s ODI World Cup back to Africa for the first time since 2003. South Africa hosts matches in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Paarl and KuGompo City. Zimbabwe’s venues are in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, while Namibia stages matches in Windhoek.

Cape Town’s Newlands hosts major early fixtures, and Johannesburg is scheduled to stage the final. The Mosi-oa-Tunya Stadium near Victoria Falls is among the distinctive venues, bringing World Cup cricket to a new location. Exact stadium entry rules and ticket availability should be checked from official event channels.

Different cities can have different weather and playing conditions. South African coastal venues may present different challenges to inland grounds, while the early and late parts of the tournament may have different day-night timings.

ODI playing format and how to read a scorecard

An ODI generally allows each side up to 50 overs. Fielding restrictions, powerplays, bowling limits and the rules for shortened matches are different from T20 cricket. When comparing player performances, pay attention to runs, balls faced, strike rate, overs, wickets and economy rate.

A team’s net run rate can become important in a group table, especially where qualification depends on the better fourth-placed finisher. A rain-affected result may change the points table and qualification scenario, so it is worth checking the latest official standings after each match.

The 2027 tournament is an ODI Cricket World Cup, not the T20 World Cup scheduled for 2028. They are separate ICC championships with different playing formats and tournament structures.
